In the time of the Judges Israel rebelled against the Lord by disobeying His commands, being unfaithful by refusing to live for Him and doing whatever was right in their own eyes. Sound familiar? We live in a time and place where people do the opposite of God’s commands, could care less about honoring Him and do only what is right in their own eyes instead of what God says is right.

Join us at Northside Church for this four week sermon series to hear how God turns rebellion into salvation through the grace, mercy, peace and love found in Jesus Christ.

Come and see what Christmas is all about as we go through the historic and miraculous accounts of Jesus’ birth in the book of Luke. The hope that God has sent us through the grace and love found in His Son is far more significant than expensive gifts, more elaborate than the most seasonal decorations and more weighty than the richest holiday drinks.

This Christmas season, join us on Sundays at 10am to discover the joy and peace that comes from a life lived with this hope in mind.

Stewardship has been our topic for the last three weeks and each sermon has come from a different angle. We are stewards of God’s time, team, talent and temple (Sunday, 10/6). We have also been entrusted by God with all the money, wealth and possessions we receive. This sermon addressed how we can honor the Lord with all the finances He’s given us. You can find the audio recording by clicking here.

Part 4: Entrusted With God-Given Treasure

The outward actions a steward takes that make him or her faithful have nothing to do with legalism but have everything to do with our heart before God. The heart is the center of human emotion, desire, thought and decision and is used by Jesus to
Lay Up Treasure In Heaven
If you needed to invest for retirement in 30 years and you had only two investment options: 1) Will skyrocket exponentially for the first 5 years but then the companies will fail and we’ll be left with nothing, but 2) will increase steadily and will never cease to exist, which would you choose? You didn’t have to enjoy math in school to choose the second option. Jesus says we have only two choices, lay up treasure on earth where it will eventually fade away or lay up treasure in heaven where it will be kept forever (Matthew 6:19-21). I’ll take the laying up treasure in heaven option please!
So how can we lay up treasure in heaven?
Watch Your Eyes
God is so much more concerned with the process rather than the result itself, with our path more so than our location. That is to say that He desires for us to be on a trajectory that is growing in Christ with our faces set toward Him (Matthew 6:22-23). If we keep our eyes on Jesus by repenting of sin, turning to Him, removing obstacles/distractions and desiring to serve Him every single day, we will be doing the very things that Jesus said lay up treasure for us in heaven (giving generously, forgiving others, doing His work, standing up for Him-especially when it’s unpopular, doing good deeds).
Live For Jesus Above All Else
Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly,” (John 10:10). The abundant life, the greatest life, is the life lived in complete surrender to Jesus. The abundant life is the life that declares: “Jesus is God and I am not. Jesus is Lord of my life. Jesus is King, not my job, not my money, not my stuff, not even my family, Jesus reigns in my life and nothing else.”
Again, Jesus says there are only two options: 1) We can live for Him, or 2) we can live for money, earthly gain, ourselves, you name it… (Matthew 6:24) Make the decision today to live for Jesus above all else. Dedicate yourself to Him and ask Him to help you live for Him with all that He has given to you. He’s worth it and He won’t let you down.

Pastor Jimmy preached part 3 of our “Entrusted: What will He find you doing” series on September 22nd. You can find the audio recording of that sermon by clicking here. During the message, the following material had to be left out for time reasons:

Part 3: Entrusted With God-Given Talent

Jesus did not leave His perfect dwelling place as King of the Universe in Heaven, come to earth, experience and indescribably brutal death, resurrect miraculously, ascend to heaven and send the Holy Spirit so that His people could float around on clouds and strum a harp for eternity. He did all this to save His people and put them to work for His glory with the gifts, talents, abilities and skills He gives them.

Invest Your Talent For The Kingdom

Jesus saves His people and puts them to work on building His house, His Kingdom, His people: The Church. In Exodus 35:30-35, God uniquely gifts His people to accomplish the task of building the Tabernacle. Right now, God has uniquely gifted His people for them to succeed in building up His church by putting their talent to work for Jesus Kingdom. It’s time for us to get to work in building His house, not our own.

Be Filled With The Holy Spirit

Moses, Joshua, Samson, Saul, David, John the Baptist, Jesus, Stephen, Philip and others experienced times where God the Holy Spirit filled them so full they couldn’t help but overflow. He offers the same to us. Colossians 1:9-11 explains the being full of the Spirit looks a lot like understanding God’s wisdom as found in His Word so we can walk in a way that honors Him, using our gifts to build His Kingdom, not our own. In fact, He says that He will strengthen us and we will be fully pleasing to Him because of His power and might.

Put Your Sails In Position, He’ll Do The Rest

Similar to what Peter writes about how the Holy Spirit’s inspiration of God’s Word in 2 Peter 1:21, so the believer is a lot like a sailboat. It is not for us to do all the work. It is not for us to know how to live perfectly or accomplish anything by our own might or power. Rather it is by the Holy Spirit that God carries us along. He just asks us to put our sails up. To begin using the talent He’s given us for His glory. To be willing to repent of our sin and seek to glorify Him in all we do. He’ll right our course when we get off. He’ll make sure we live abundantly and fruitfully.

Part 2: Entrusted With A God-Given Team

God has not only entrusted to you a specific amount of time to live but also a team to lead towards Him. In Acts 17, Paul began sharing the gospel with Greeks who believed in a pantheon of gods including one by the name of ‘Tyche’ translated ‘Luck’ or ‘Chance.’ And then Paul said something curious about what the one true God had determined, “And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God…”  Acts 17:26-27.

It Is Not By Chance

God has determined the time you were born, the family you were born or adopted into and the places you have lived. You are at the time and place you are now not by accident but by design. God has a great purpose for you and everyone He has placed in your life. Instead of seeing people as a nuisance or a blessing we can see people for what they are: Given to us by God so that we can have the opportunity to impact them for Christ.

Don’t Let Your Circumstances Dictate Your Impact

There was once a young man who was a little arrogant. His over confidence got him in trouble and he found himself with no freedom for several years. Even though he was enslaved as a servant and eventually thrown in prison in a foreign land he never allowed his circumstances to dictate the impact he could make on others. God continued to use him for His glory and eventually he ended up saving the known world from a famine. His name was Joseph and his story can be found Genesis 37-50.

God Is Calling You To Love Your Team Towards Him

No matter where you are, what you do for work, what people are in your circles, God has placed you there in order to love the people around you for Him. Every interaction you have leaves an imprint on someone, what kind of imprint are you leaving behind?

Who is it that Jesus has entrusted you to love towards Him? What circles could he be asking you to jump into in order to engage unbelievers with the gospel? Find out more in Part 3: Entrusted With God-Given Talent this Sunday at 10am at Northside Church.

Part 1: Entrusted With God-Given Time

Minutes turn into hours which turn into days which turn into weeks and even months. Have you ever wondered why the time goes so fast? God, the eternal author of life has given us every second of every day that we get to live. As our master, he has entrusted us with time which we get to use for His glory. He is going to return and hold us accountable for how we spend it.

Don’t Waste Your Life

No one knows how much time they have but on one thing the Bible is very clear: we are to seek the Lord’s will for our lives by “making the best use of the time” we do have (Ephesians 5:16-17).

God Has Redeemed You So You Can Redeem Your Time

Have you been counted among those who have been redeemed through what Jesus has done? God has gone to great lengths to bring you back to Himself, He asks you to respond by trusting in His Son Jesus. God is our hope in the most hopeless situations. As we believe in Him, He instills us with a new hope found in Christ. All the time He gives us we can now redeem by forever living for His glory instead of our own.

Always Ask: “Will What I’m Doing Leave A Lasting Impact?”

The only thing that lasts beyond this life is relationship with God and relationship with others. You can’t take anything else with you, Jesus summed the whole Bible into a single phrase: “Love God, love people.”

How are you loving those around you towards Jesus? Find out more in Part 2: Entrusted With A God-Given Team this Sunday at 10am at Northside Church.
